Radha and Krishna: The Never Ending Story
Sri Barsana: The Abode of Divine Love.
Barsana is believed to be the birthplace. of Radha Rani sometime around 2000-3000 BC. The temple is stretched on the top of Bhanugarh hills, which is about 250 meters in height.
According to Wikipedia: "With Krishna, Radha is acknowledged as the Supreme Goddess. It is said that Krishna is only satiated by devotional service in loving servitude and Radha is the personification of devotional service to the supreme lord. Various devotees worship her with the understanding of her merciful nature as the only way to attain Krishna.
Radha is also depicted to be Krishna himself, split into two, for the purpose of his enjoyment. As per Hindu scriptures, Radha is considered as the complete incarnation of Mahalakshmi.
It is believed that Krishna enchants the world, but Radha enchants even him. Therefore, she is the supreme goddess of all and together they are called as Radha-Krishna."
According to Wikipedia:
Radha Rani Temple is originally believed to be established by King Vajranabh (great-grandson of Krishna) around 5000 years ago. The temple is said to be in ruins; the icons were rediscovered by Narayan Bhatt (a disciple of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu) and a temple was built in 1675 AD by Raja Veer Singh. Later, the present structure of temple was built by Narayan Bhatt with the help of Raja Todarmal, one of the governors in the Akbar's court.
There is also a popular legend associated with the temple. According to it, Krishna's father Nanda and Radha's father Vrishbhanu were close friends. While Nanda was head of Gokula, Vrishbhanu was head of Rawal. However, fed up with the atrocities of Mathura's king Kamsa, both of them with their people shifted to Nandgaon and Barsana. Nanda made Nandishvar hill his home and Vrishbhanu made Bhanugarh hill his permanent abode, which also ultimately became the abode of Radha. Presently, in both the twin towns of Barsana and Nandgaon, there stands the historical temples dedicated to Radha and Krishna on the peak of Nandishvar and Bhanugarh hills respectively. While Nandgaon temple is called the Nand Bhawan, Barsana temple is named after Radha, called Radha Rani temple or Shriji (Shreeji temple). Courtesy of Wikipedia
Lord Krishna benedicted Brahmaji to become a mountain in Barsana Dham. This mountain is comprised of two hills. The white colored hill is the longer one and is called Brahma Hill while the black colored one is called Vishnu Hill.
The four peaks of this mountain in Barsana are actually the four heads of Brahmaji. He is said to find pleasure with his devotees walking atop his head, sitting on his head, dancing on his head.
The peak where Vrishabhanu Maharaj built his palace is known as Bhanugarh. Just across the ridge from Bhangadh, there is the beautiful peak called Vilasgarh. This is where Shri Radha Rani and Krishna are said to have performed innumerable playful pastimes and enjoyed their time together here on Earth.
The esoteric mountain peak where Shrimati Radharani would go into seclusion during her bouts of Anger is Maangarh. Atop Maangarh is the Maan Mandir, the place where Shrimati Radharani would go into seclusion in her transcendental loving anger towards Krishna for his many love affairs and for always leaving her.
The peak where the pastimes of charity and tax collection are performed is Daangadh. Vilasgarh lies on the Vishnu Hill while the rest three lie on Brahma Hill.
ONE OF THE 4 PEAKS OF THE GREAT MOUNTAIN OF BRAHMA HAS BEEN DEVOTED TO RADHA TO BE UTILIZED AS A PLACE OF SECLUSION WHEN RADHA RANI EXPERIENCED BOUTS OF EXTREME ANGER
This angry, sulking mood of Radha Rani is known as “Asman”. It’s a very integral part of enriching Radha and Krishna’s pastimes. Radha Rani gets angry with others, but never towards Krishna. With Krishna she feels only extreme sadness and despair when he leaves. And Krishna never makes anyone upset except for Radha Rani.
All these twists and turns in the epic love story of Radha and Krishna are begotten by Yoga Maya. Yoga Maya can be thought of metaphorically as the director of a play who is orchestrating the entire scene with the intention being to enrich and heighten the enjoyment and reciprocation of bliss between Radha and Krishna and the devotees.
According to Srila Prabhupada Lila: Radharani has come to France as the most beautiful French girl.
Jyotirmayi dasi, in her book Following Srila Prabhupada-A Chronological Series writes: "When we received the Deities from India, we noticed that it needed a little bit of retouching of the painting. When I was painting Radharani, I noticed that She had a little brown spot on the white marble. So I wanted to cover that little spot. So I painted over the little brown spot on Her cheek, and you see here that Prabhupada is rubbing Radharani's cheek.
The reason is what happened is that when he saw Her, She was completely white; and then when Bhagavan poured on Her the different oils, the oil made the paint go away. So suddenly he saw the little brown spot appearing, and that's why he is rubbing Radharani's cheek in order to see what's going on. So, of course, later on after the Deities were installed, I went back to repainting that little part on Her cheek and it became white again.
Then Prabhupada mentioned two things about Radharani. One was that when we dressed Them, We didn't have yet very very wonderful, nice clothes. We had some very simple clothes that we got from India, and the skirts were falling very flat around Krishna's body and Radharani's body. So Prabhupada told us that the skirts had to be very wide, looking very pretty and very wide. So he said, "You should put some sticks underneath to have the skirts open very wide around them."
And then he said another thing, which was very surprising to us. He said that, "Radharani has come to France as the most beautiful French girl because in the whole world, the girls with the most beautiful faces are the French girls."
In this verse, Krishna says to Arjuna on the Battle field: “Once you know about my appearance and my activities you don’t enter another woman’s womb again”. This is Sri Prabhu’s favorite verse because it explains how we as humans can break the karmic cycle and stop the reincarnation process.
More in depth analysis coming soon.
"If Krishna were to manifest as a book, he would be the Bhagavad Gita
If Krishna were to manifest as stone, it would be as a deity
If Krishna were to manifest as wood, he would be Jagannath
If Krishna were to manifest as a piece of land, it would be as Vrindavon
If Krishna were to manifest as sound, it is as the holy name.
If Krishna were to manifest as water, it is as Ganga or Jamuna
If Krishna has to manifest in the form of a personality it is as Sri Guru
If Krishna has to manifest in the form of time, it is as Ekadashi."
-Sri Amarendra Dasa
According to Wikipedia, Radha and Krishna's son was born in the womb of Rukhmini, and Krishna and Rukhmini were parents to the child. His name was Pradyumna. Metaphorically, this theme of the heart of the princess reincarnating into the child of her lover can be seen throughout world culture and even in the Ramayana in the instance of Arjuna and Princess Ulupi. Their love child was a boy. Princess Persephone is also known for leaving behind a piece of her heart with her lover that later reincarnated into Adonis in the womb of another mother.
Separate but related to understanding the quantification system is the psychology of relationships. In general, it takes more energy, time, effort, resources, and skill to maintain a relationship with another individual than to destroy one. Is it not easier to burn bridges than to build them? In his same manner, Shiva, the personification of destruction, has about 50 divine qualities, and Krishna, because his job is to preserve relationships, has 64 qualities of the divine.
Some scholars describe the concept of divinity and the distribution of power as described in the Vedas as being very similar to that described in the Bible. In modern day society, I like to think of the system as similar to the infrastructure of Chase bank, with God being the CEO. Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva and their consorts are the VPs. Deities like Draupadi, Rukhmini, Shubadra, etc are similar to department heads.
According to Sri Prabhu, if God, the Source, the Father, the Ultimate Creator has 100 qualities of the divine, then Krishna has 64.
In Hinduism, Om represents creation, preservation, destruction. Metaphorically, the 3 fundamentals of the cycle of life are personified as Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Krishna is an avatar of Vishnu and his dharma is to preserve what was created.
Since it takes more energy to maintain a relationship than to destroy one, Shiva is said to have approximately 50 qualities of the divine. Krishna's job is to preserve so he is said to have 64 qualities of the divine.
The idols representing Radha and Krishna are bathed in milk during a ritual performed to celebrate Janmashtami. Radha and Krishna, being cowherds, love dairy.
There lived a beautiful and kind queen named Radha. Although she was fair and just and full of love, after being a queen for a while, her position of power and her status got to her head. Radha started to talk down to the servants and often lost her temper with them.
Her tongue grew vicious and people started not to like her so much because her words were hurtful to them. One day, she insulted the personal servant of her beloved Lord Krishna to such a degree that the servant placed a terrible curse on Radha.
The curse he placed was for the one and only thing that Radha held dear to her heart to be taken from her, such that she could understand the hurt that she was causing others with her unkind words.
He cursed Radha and Krishna to be separated forever and ever, and for her to stay on earth always, such that even after death, she would never know who she was and could never go to heaven and live happily ever after with her beloved, Lord Krishna.
Soon after, Krishna was called away from the palace to fight a big war to defend the land, and his travels took him far away from Radha and Vrindavan for many many years. Poor Radha, when she realized her mistakes she felt so terrible. She apologized to everyone and she cried and cried. She missed her beloved so much and she felt so badly about the way she had treated those around her. She vowed to try her hardest to become the best version of herself and to be kind to others.
Seeing her sorrow, Krishna’s servant who had placed the curse prayed to see if there was anything that could be done to reverse it, as he had placed it out of anger. Alas, it was too late to reverse such a strong curse that had already taken Krishna to far away lands. The heavens felt bad seeing such sorrow by the separation of Radha from her Krishna, and after some time, they were able to offer some solace to Radha.
It was decided that once every 99 years throughout the Kali Yuga, during the magical time of the total solar eclipse, Radha and Krishna could reunite for just a little while and dance in each others arms atop the moon.
Radha was overjoyed by this and was so grateful. As long as she got to see her Krishna, she felt she could endure the 99 year separations in between, no matter how hard the years may be while cursed with the inability to remember that she is Radha each reincarnation here on earth.

Cursed by fate to endure long periods of separation, Radha patiently keeps taal while awaiting the passage of time until her divine encounter with Krishna.
Janmashtami is Krishna's birthday, and therefore it is Radha's favorite time of year. Krishna was born in an area of chaos. It was a time when "persecution was rampant, freedoms were denied, evil was everywhere, and when there was a threat to his life by his uncle King Kansa.". Courtesy of Wikipedia.
Immediately following the birth at Mathura, his father Vasudeva Anakadundubhi took Krishna across the Yamuna, to foster parents in Gokul, named Nanda and Yashoda. This legend is celebrated on Janmashtami by people keeping fast, singing devotional songs of love for Krishna, and keeping a vigil into the night. Courtesy of Wikipedia
During the Kali Yuga, Radha Has Looked Forward to the Total Solar Eclipse Every 99 Years. Learn more about Radha's sharp tongue and the Curse below. For the last 3000 years here on Earth, Radha has looked forward to the total solar eclipse in her region every 99 years because that is the only time she was able to be with Krishna during the Kali Yuga.
Prior to the reign of Julius Caesar and his imposition of a solar based calendar system, it was quite common to follow a lunar based method of keeping time. Some experts believe the reason Julius Caesar changed the calendar system is simply because the Gregorian method is a comparatively simplistic method which requires much less math, and Julius Caesar simply didn't care for, or wasn't inclined towards, math.
Krishna love Radha for her beautiful mind. Radha was an astute scholar and studied complex differential equations, astrology, science, and medicine as part of her life at the palace. The science of fasting and Ayurvedic medicine are two areas of important for Radha and this is demonstrated on the ISKON lunar calendar, in which they assign importance to Ekadashi every month - a time for fasting as determined by the lunar cycle for a period of 36 hours. This tradition was held by Radha and later also Queen Cleopatra.
